My Heart In My Gut ...

Yesterday I had the most horrible thing happen. My cat Nemo is a little bugger. He is an indoor cat and trys to sneak out every chance he gets. We do let both cats out in a large cage almost everyday (weather permitting) but I don't let them 'roam' around. Or we let them out on the upper deck if we are out there. It's a proven fact that outdoor cats don't live as long as indoor cats and are subject to so many dangers. Because I live behind a treed conservation area we have many wild animals around including fox, coyote etc. Whenever Nemo has snuck out, we usually catch him before he gets out of our backyard area. (It's not fenced in).

Anyways, there has been this large orange and white cat hanging around for a few weeks. At first I thought he must belong to someone in the area but realized soon enough that he was a stray. Nemo and Mischief have been watching him out the back window and going nuts. So my husband and I decided we would catch him and bring him to the spca. I would rather him at least have a chance of being adopted then freezing or starving to death. We planned on doing that yesterday after he got home from work.

So yesterday at 10:30 am. I went to step out the back patio doors (looking around for Nemo first ... he was no where in sight) and just as I opened the door a few inches ... bam ... Nemo was through my legs and out the crack. I have NO idea where he came from! But the stray cat was in the backyard and he immediately started chasing him. Before I could even get two steps outside they had run over 200 ft into the brush and over the hill. OH MY GOD! There was nothing I could do except call him and it only took a few seconds for me to realize that it was not going to do any good. So I ran back into the house and called my husband at work and he came home (luckily he wasn't in a class, just in his office). I was sooooooo upset. Nemo has NEVER been outside and he's declawed! My husband came home and we walked through some bush and over the hill. We used binoculours to look through a farmers fields and called and called him. He was no where in sight. Now I'm devastated! My husband had to go back to work but he said for me to make some flyers and as soon as he got home we would go out looking again. So I made up some flyers ... while going outside every ten minutes and calling him. About an hour later the orange and white cat came strolling back by himself. Oh noooo ... the worst thoughts were filling my mind. Now I'm picturing Nemo laying somewhere hurt or worse. I spent the next few hours just pacing outside, calling his name and crying. UG! At about 2:30 pm and after 4 hours of him being missing my heart was in my gut ... I had little hope. My husband doesn't get off until 4 pm and it gets dark by 5 pm now.

At 3:30 (now it's been 5 hours) I stepped outside for the 50th time to call him and noticed something on the back grass 3 doors down by a swingset. I called his name and seen his head turn towards me. OH MY GOD! I ran towards him (slowly, I didn't want him to run again) and called his name and talked all nice to him. When I got up to him he was laying on his stomach with his feet tucked under him and looked fine but when I got closer he started hissing at me and growling like a dog! He is NEVER like that. There is no way I could of picked him up. So I sat a few feet away and just talked to him. If I even slightly made a move to get closer he would growl again. I decided to run home and get some food and his cat carrier. I had to take the chance that he would still be there when I got back ... and he was. So I put the bowl of food in front of him and he immediately started eating. I eventually just started patting his head and he calmed down a bit. After a few minutes I felt comfortable enough to pick him up and took him home. WHAT A RELIEF!!! He is fine, no scratches or anything on him but he was shaken up. We will never know where he went or what he ran into but I think his reaction when I first got to him was from pure defensive terror. It only took him about an hour to get totally back to normal and we are thrilled to have him back~!!!

If only they could talk? Glad he's home safe and sound, though sounds like he just might be down to 8 lives! And I hope you're feeling better too .... it's amazing how just much animals pull on our heartstrings. Thanks as always for sharing your designs

OMG Lil!!! Thanks heavens that you found Nemo and he wasn't injured (or worse). I know how upsetting that ordeal must have been for you... I would have been freaking too. WHAT a little bugger... Nemo's so darn speedy... but I'm sure he was scared to death after that length of time out in the big bad world. I'm SO GLAD he's OK. Sorry you had to go through all that. Pets!!! They give us some of the "best of times" and the "worst of times". At least your little family is all back together again, safe and sound. Big hugs to you all.
