The other day I received a beautiful email from one of my blog readers. (Thank you ~ you know who are are ~) Like myself, she is a nature lover. After reading it I got to thinking if there was ever a time in my life I didn't have this love of nature. As far back as I can remember I always enjoyed animals and nature of all kinds. One of my favourite DVD's is the 'Planet Earth' series which is a fabulous set of 11 dvds. I couldn't even imagine hurting a bird or an animal. When I hear of animal cruelty and things like that it just boggles my mind. How can ANYONE have it in them to hurt an animal?
It also got me thinking how many animals and birds some people consider 'pests'. One of the main ones here in Ontario I think people would say is seagulls. The reason being they gather where there is food available and they happen to love people food. They tend to go near beaches and where people are picnicing, parks and any other place people might throw them a bite of their pizza ... lol. And they can be messy. Actually not too far from where I live litterly hundreds of seagulls decided to use one mans black roof as their gathering place. We have no idea why. But needless to say his roof was ... not black very long ... lol. So he had to resort to putting 2 plastic owls on his peaks and the seagulls moved on. But at least he was civil about how to get rid of them. But when you actually take a step back and look at a seagull, they are very beautiful birds. In August when we went on the Thousand Islands cruise we had one seagull that decided to follow the boat ... which he did for a very long time. Yes, he was hoping someone would throw him something to eat (unfortunately there was no food on the boat) and he was determined and thought that if he stayed with the boat long enough it would happen.
Every once in awhile the wind would take him down and he'd land on the water and then immediately catch up to the boat again. I have to give him credit ... he was flying against the wind for at least 30 minutes straight and got nothing in return.
And although I've heard many people say 'Don't feed the seagulls' - I still will feed the seagulls. No, I don't want them camping in my backyard (or on my roof ...lol) but if I'm at a park feeding the ducks, the seagulls come around and I feed them too. And I'll throw bread out in my backyard and when they are done eating they leave. Unfortunately not everyone loves nature.
But they are truely missing something.
